A Life Marked by Service and Resilience
Stefania Petryk, a member of the Newcastle Polish Seventh-Day Adventist Church, recently celebrated her 100th birthday, marking a remarkable journey filled with resilience, faith, and generosity. On this milestone occasion, family and friends gathered to honor her life—a life that stands as a testament to enduring faith and compassionate service.
From Ukraine to Australia: A Journey of Strength
Born in Roznoshyntsi, Ukraine, in 1925, Stefania's formative years were marred by the harsh realities of World War II. As a young woman, she found herself forced into labor under Nazi occupation. Yet, her spirit remained unbroken. After escaping to Munich, she took on a courageous role, translating for Ukrainian Jews and safeguarding them from deportation to concentration camps. This pivotal experience nurtured her inherent sense of service and compassion, values that would guide her throughout her life.
Finding Faith Amidst Adversity
Stefania migrated to Australia in 1951, where her journey continued in Bathurst before she eventually settled in Medowie. Here, an unexpected encounter with a door-to-door Bible study introduced her to the Seventh-Day Adventist faith, despite initial opposition from her husband. Her conviction was palpable as she declared, "Because I want to go with God’s way," exemplifying an unwavering commitment to her faith despite challenges.
A Heart for the Less Fortunate
Throughout her life in Australia, Stefania dedicated herself to humanitarian efforts, using her resources to uplift the underprivileged. She spent years collecting and sending clothing to orphanages in Ukraine and supported children affected by poverty, including those impacted by the Chernobyl disaster. Her humanitarian initiatives earned her accolades from both the Australian and Ukrainian governments, proving that her compassionate heart transcended borders.
Continued Faith and Community Involvement
Even at 100, Stefania remains deeply connected to her faith community, currently residing in Wallsend. She continues to nurture her garden and dedicates her time to prayer and Bible reading. Her mantra, "I want to be with God," resonates with many in her community, illustrating that her faith and empathy for others remain central to her life. Her story not only inspires but also reinforces the importance of kindness and community service in a world that often grows indifferent.
A Reflection on What It Means to Live Generously
Stefania Petryk's century of life is not just a celebration of longevity but also a celebration of a life well-lived—a life characterized by profound faith and selfless acts of generosity. Her story encourages the Seventh-Day Adventist community and beyond to reflect on the power of resilience, the joy of giving, and the importance of faith as a guiding principle. As we celebrate Stefania on her 100th birthday, we are reminded that our lives can also impact the world—one act of kindness at a time.
